Applicants are initially handled by our Membership Coordinator, Dale Harris, who will determine the validity of the application and get examples for review. After he determines that they are in his opinion qualified to participate in our projects, the Membership Committee (Dale, Gary Gosson and Ty Halderman) will further review the examples and make the final decision.
Mentors are always needed.
Mentoring involves you being the primary point of contact for questions the new member may have, about any of these topics:
You aren't the only person the new member will talk to, but to reduce the noise on the mailing lists, you should be the first point of contact. Get to know them a bit, and especially make sure they know what your schedule is. If you only read mail at night, they need to know that you won't be available for an instant response. Stuff like that.
If you particularly want to work directly with the new member on their first level, that's fine, but isn't required. You also aren't required to be a reviewer of their level, though it might be a help to run through it with them in case there are minor problems that can be fended off early.
Of course, most of you either were helped out by others in your early days with the team or found out the hard way what sort of things a new member needs to know. The guidelines above are more so you know what the Triumvirate thinks you'll be doing with the new member, and maybe a bit of a checklist, than any "rules" per se.
