These are some animated GIFs put together quickly out of the TC sprites, to help give an idea of what the creatures so far look like. The sprites aren't finalized, and the animations in the game aren't the same as what you'll see here (duh) but it should help a bit.
These GIFs are kind of small, but it helps to remember how small DOOM graphics sizes are in the real world. a 64x64 sprite is less than 2% of a 640x480 screen, and lots of us are using higher resolutions than that. I also wanted to keep the GIF sizes down, and these are from 20KB to over 100KB each. Sorry for the long load times, but at least you don't have to download a whole TC.
I'm not sure if Netscape honors the resizing commands I've given the images, but MSIE does and they're a lot easier to see that way. Probably new versions of both browsers do the resizing ok...
Meanwhile, on with the show...
Pet Rock |
|
He wakes up, wanders around a bit, attacks a couple of times, then gets hurt and dies. A brief pause and he then rotates for you. Rinse, lather, repeat |
Shrimp of Death |
|
This guy flies a bit, then throws a fireball a time or two. You don't see the fireball, unfortunately, since that's a different sprite, but you see a brightening of the yellow in his midsection. Then he does the close attack, which is where he stabs you in the gut and blood flies. Then he dies into a little pile of confetti. Finally he does the "look at me" pirouette too. |
Star Beast |
|
He's big and ugly, but the main thing is that he's big and ugly. He has some frames that are the reverse of these walking frames, so he walks more symmetrically than it shows here. He fires a fireball from his gut, which is what the brightening yellow and the orange spot is all about. He sort of disintegrates when killed. Too bad you can't hear the sounds that go with these guys. |
Anachroid |
|
She's bigger than she looks. She's about as tall as the Star Beast (bigger than you are) but to get the animation right I had to allow it to resize some frames. She wanders around a bit, then raises up on her legs and drops down a pod that shoots fireballs in a 6-spread pattern. That's happening when you see the bright yellow underneath her. When she dies, she disconnects the pod, flips over, and the pod explodes, making her a seriously crispy critter. |
Water Serpent |
|
You don't see much of little Nessie here, but that's because the bulk of it is underwater. We don't know how long it is, just that it keeps one hump at the surface as it slithers through the water. It'll rear back and spit fireballs (in this image it's when the eyes turn yellow). It doesn't like to be killed, and bleeds accordingly. This image ends with a few side frames to give you an idea that it's much more interesting when seen sideways. |
Leaf Erikson |
|
Norwegian? I dunno. I do know not to spell Leif that way, but it's incredibly amusing when applied to a tree. No, really, it is... Leaf here is supposed to be throwing a stick at you. We're going to do more with him, but the main idea is that he has a bit of a face and walks on his roots after he wakes up. The rest of it is work in progress. (Actually if you run into one of these out in the game, he'll mow you down like a chaingunner, which is a bit hard to understand at the time...) In this graphic he just kind of waves around and threatens you more than anything else. Give him a break and act scared. |
Fireballs and Such |
|
This is an assembly of various fireballs, and flaming and not-so-flaming arrows. The quick picture in a static location doesn't do them justice--the little cute yellow and blue pillows look considerably more worrisome when they're coming at you in the game and you know they mean you're about to feel pain. The yellow ones come from the Shrimp of Death, the blue from the Water Serpent, the red/orange from the Star Beast and the arrows are yours, from your crossbow. The crossbow isn't shown, but lots of things aren't shown here. This is a starter set--get over it. |

Lightning |
Lame graphic, cool effect when encountered in play. Much better when you hear the thunder crack. |
...
That's it for now. Go away.
